About the artwork
Longing, distant eyes, lined with smudged kohl above red, sensual lips pursed in deep thought- Min Yi Yao imbues every composing stroke of his subject’s face with a delicate femininity, capturing every curve and shadow enveloping her reverie. With his signature unusual wild strokes, the artist not only captures elusive detail, but also gives the figure a haze of white noise, impressing disengagement from reality and surreal overtones, in spite of the realistic detailing. The muted grays used add to the feeling of distance, contrasted by the bold and sensuous red of her lips that inject the deadened fade with vibrant life. The contrasting colors, strokes and tangibility come together to form a striking portrayal of the transmutable human emotion, both intriguing and resonating with all who view it.
